Golf Etiquette for Newbs: The Basics

Rules and manners are a important element of golf, and it’s essential to know the basic principles when playing for the first time.

Each course is slightly different and you should be aware of course rules whether your playing alone, with someone else, or with multiple players. Usually you either play ready golf or honors, which means that either the first person whos ready to hit can hit first, or the person with the best score from the previous hole hits first. Whoever hits first, its important to be tuned in to the golfers in front and behind you.

It is never appropriate to hit when the group ahead of you is still close enough to reach. If you are playing with other players, wait until it’s your turn and never swing at the same time as another player. This can be dangerous for the group ahead of you and confusing to your group.

When you’re waiting on your turn to hit, analyze the shot and choose the right club for the shot. Try to visualize where the ball should go with an ideal shot. Playing ready golf is the most appropriate way for beginners to get started because it keeps the game progressing and is less rigid. When you step up to your shot, don’t rush the swing just relax and aim for an easy, fluid motion.

If you’re delaying the group behind you because you’re a beginner or playing with beginners, you can always allow other groups to play through. You can wave to them and they’ll understand that you’re letting them play through your group. This is always an appreciated tactic.

When someone else is swinging, don’t stand in their way and try to be respectfully quiet. Talking and unwrapping items can be distracting while trying to hit.

Replacing divots is another fundamental aspect of the game. When you’re on the teebox and you take some ground with your swing, cover the exposed ground with the mixture of sand and seed most courses leave nearby. When on the fairway, simply put the chunk of ground back and step it down. And when you’re on the green, pull out your handy divot tool and fix the spot where your ball landed.

When you have finished a hole, replace the flag and vacate the green so that the group behind you is able to continue. Count your score and write it on the scorecard when you’re back at your cart.

Of course, there are other rules of golf that you’ll pick up as you go, but these simple ones will give you enough knowledge to get through the course without embarrassment.
